- Gemma Arterton was director Jonathan Glazer's first choice for the lead role, but the production needed a bigger star to secure funding; the part went to Scarlett Johansson, who stayed committed to the project for four years before it was finally made.
- Many scenes of Johansson's character picking up men in a van, plus nightclub and shopping-center sequences, were unscripted and filmed with hidden cameras on unsuspecting members of the public, who were only told afterward and asked for permission to use the footage.
- Rather than use prosthetics for the character with a facial disfigurement, director Jonathan Glazer contacted the charity Changing Faces and cast Adam Pearson, who has neurofibromatosis, in the role; Pearson's own suggestions about how the alien could lure him were written into the script.
- The crew built their own custom cameras and rigged Johansson's van to tow a generator trailer so she could really drive it with the crew hidden inside; for the black void where her character traps men, they built a set with a reflective floor, and had the men walk into a pool whose floor slowly sank to submerge them.
