Plot summary
Griffin Keyes asks Stephanie to marry him, and she refuses, saying his job with the animals is the reason. Five years afterward he is the head keeper at Boston's Franklin Park Zoo. His brother Dave celebrates his engagement at the zoo, and Stephanie is one of the guests. Dave tells Griffin he could sell cars with him instead. The animals, who consider Griffin the best keeper they have had, meet to work out how to help him win Stephanie back without his leaving, though Joe the lion reminds them that speaking to a human breaks their code.

- Tweet, the giraffe famous for playing Geoffrey in Toys R Us commercials and appearing in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, died at 18 after filming Zookeeper when he ate pieces of the blue tarp covering his stall, which led PETA to protest at the film's premiere.
- A 2005 video showing elephant actor Tai being abused by his trainers surfaced in 2011, sparking a boycott campaign against Zookeeper and prompting the group ADI to press the American Humane Association to change how it certifies animal treatment on film sets.
- MGM won a bidding war against DreamWorks Pictures and Walt Disney Pictures to buy the Zookeeper script for $2 million in 2008.
- Zookeeper was the first MGM film co-produced with Adam Sandler's Happy Madison Productions and also the first MGM release after the studio had filed for bankruptcy the previous year.
