Plot summary
About the Fit, an online fashion company in Brooklyn that is growing fast, has created a position for a senior intern. Ben Whittaker, a 70-year-old widower and a retired executive from Dex One, applies and is one of three older interns taken on. He is assigned to Jules Ostin, the company's founder and CEO, who doubts he belongs there and pays him little attention at first. His friendly manner and his advice on work and life win over his co-workers. He also organizes a cluttered desk that has been bothering Jules, which puts him in her good graces.

- Originally set up at Paramount Pictures, the film was planned to feature Tina Fey and Michael Caine in the lead roles; after it was handed to Warner Bros., Reese Witherspoon replaced Fey, then left on January 15, 2014 over scheduling conflicts.
- Deepika Padukone announced in February 2020 that she would produce a Hindi remake and play the female lead; Rishi Kapoor was initially cast as the male lead, but after his sudden death in April 2020 he was replaced by Amitabh Bachchan in March 2021.
- Quentin Tarantino viewed the film as Oscar-worthy and used it to argue that Hollywood has a boom or bust aspect when it comes to female directors.
- Clem Bastow, writing for The Guardian, suggested the film's poor reviews were primarily coming from men, who form the overwhelming majority of film critics, and that female critics "feel the need to go hard on certain films for women" such as The Intern.
