Plot summary

Grendel comes to a castle-like outpost night after night, killing the people trapped inside, though it never touches the border lord Hrothgar. A rival siege line surrounds the walls and kills anyone who tries to leave, so the outpost's residents cannot escape. A wanderer named Beowulf saves Pendra, a resident who flees, and she rides with him until she sees that he is bound for the outpost and turns back. Beowulf is permitted to stay and help kill the beast. Kyra, Hrothgar's daughter, and Roland, the outpost's master of arms, think a rival family hired Beowulf to avenge Nivri, Kyra's former husband. Kyra's doubts fade when she learns that Beowulf can sense evil.
