Plot summary
Ten years after the Battle of Naboo, planets on the outer rim are leaving the Galactic Republic and joining a Separatist movement. Padmé Amidala, Naboo's former queen and now its senator, arrives on Coruscant to cast her vote against forming an army for the Jedi. An attempt on her life follows, and the Jedi Council places her under the guard of Obi-Wan Kenobi and his apprentice, Anakin Skywalker. The two Jedi chase the shapeshifter Zam Wessell, who is killed by a poisoned dart before she can say who hired her. Obi-Wan is sent to track down the killer, while Anakin escorts Padmé to Naboo, where the two fall in love despite the Jedi Code's ban on attachment.

- In 2000, an underground organization calling itself the Atlas Group, based in Perth, Western Australia, offered a copy of the screenplay to various fan sites and media organizations, with an asking price of US$100,000. The scheme was reported to Lucasfilm by the fan site TheForce.Net.
- E! reported that Lucas had asked NSYNC to film a small background cameo appearance in order to satisfy his daughters. They were subsequently cut out of the film in post-production, although they are briefly visible during a crowd shot from above.
- Ray Winstone auditioned for the role of Padmé's father but was dismissed after showing up drunk at the audition. The role eventually went to another actor, and was then cut from the film altogether.
- A large search was held for an actor to portray Anakin Skywalker, and Lucas auditioned mostly unknown actors before casting Christensen. Jonathan Brandis, Chris Klein, Topher Grace, Joshua Jackson, Ryan Phillippe, Colin Hanks and Paul Walker were among those considered, and Leonardo DiCaprio met Lucas for the role but declined, feeling he "wasn't ready to take that dive".
- Because of the acrobatics of the lightsaber fight between Count Dooku and Yoda, the then 78-year-old Christopher Lee relied on a stunt double to perform the most demanding scenes. Lee's face was superimposed onto the double's body in all shots other than close-ups, which he performed himself.
- David Duchovny turned down an undisclosed role in Attack of the Clones so that he could star in Evolution (2001) instead.
- In a 2023 interview, cartoonist and animation producer ND Stevenson said the shapeshifting character Zam Wesell was where his "love of shapeshifters specifically started", and that Double Trouble in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is meant as an homage to Wesell.
- On its opening day Attack of the Clones made $30.1 million, combined with $6 million from midnight screenings, the highest Thursday gross of any film at that point, beating the former record held by Independence Day. It held the record until The Matrix Reloaded took it in 2003.
