Plot summary
After an economic collapse, a party that calls itself the New Founding Fathers of America takes office and creates the Purge, an annual twelve-hour night when crime with weapons below a certain grade is legal and emergency services are unavailable. By 2022, unemployment sits at one percent and the country is prospering. James Sandin, a security systems salesman, returns to his house in a gated Los Angeles community to wait out the night with his wife Mary and their children, Zoe and Charlie. He has sold his upgraded system to several neighbors and seals the house before the Purge starts. Zoe's boyfriend Henry has slipped inside beforehand. Watching the monitors, Charlie spots a wounded man outside calling for help.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Purge (2013)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The low budget kept the film almost entirely inside one house. Hawke slept on Blum's couch during filming and agreed to $10,000 up front, then made $2 million in backend compensation after the film's success.
- DeMonaco was partly inspired to write the script by a comment from his wife after a road rage incident. He and Lemercier recalled negative feedback while seeking funding, being told the script was "too un-American" because of its themes of violence and gun control, until Jason Blum provided $3 million to produce the film.
- DeMonaco and Lemercier were initially unsure the film would be released at all, given mediocre screen testing, though Black and Latino test audiences responded positively. DeMonaco also found response cards from viewers who expressed approval for the purge concept, which he found disturbing and antithetical to the film's message.
