In rural Pennsylvania, Martha is a widow with a son and a daughter, and they live in a house with a basement. Martha arrives home to find her daughter in the basement with a shotgun, about to take her own life. Martha tries to stop her and cannot, and she loses the girl to suicide. A classified United States military document, uncovered after World War II, is said to have inspired the story, and it described a Nazi occult experiment brought to an underground facility in Downingtown, Pennsylvania.
