Milton Berle

Biography

Milton Berle was an American actor and comedian whose career in entertainment spanned more than eight decades. Born in New York City, he started as a child actor in silent films and on the stage, then worked in vaudeville as a master of ceremonies before moving into radio. As host of NBC's Texaco Star Theatre from 1948 to 1953, he used vaudeville slapstick and outlandish costumes to become television's first major star, known as Uncle Miltie and Mr. Television. He received the Emmy for Most Outstanding Kinescoped Personality in 1950, and in 1960 the Hollywood Walk of Fame gave him stars for radio and television. His films included It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), The Loved One (1965), Who's Minding the Mint? (1967), Lepke (1975), The Muppet Movie (1979) and Broadway Danny Rose (1984). He also acted on Broadway, wrote songs, and later appeared in television roles.
