Douglas Fairbanks
Biography
Douglas Fairbanks was an American actor and filmmaker who became one of the silent era's biggest stars, best known for swashbuckling costume adventures and for being the first actor to play Zorro. Born in Denver, Colorado, he started on the stage, toured with Frederick Warde's troupe, and reached Broadway by the late 1800s. In 1915 he signed with Triangle Pictures and made his first film, The Lamb. The Mark of Zorro (1920) was a huge success and turned him into a superstar. Later costume films included The Black Pirate (1926), Robin Hood (1922), and The Thief of Bagdad (1924). With Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, and D. W. Griffith, he formed United Artists in 1919, and he served as the first president of the Motion Picture Academy. His last silent film was The Iron Mask (1929), and his final screen role came in The Private Life of Don Juan (1934). He died in 1939.

Behind the camera
In 1919, Fairbanks, Pickford, Chaplin, and D. W. Griffith started United Artists so the studios could not control them and their independence would be safe. The company handled its own distribution and let them control their films and profits completely.
