Plot summary
A cub is rescued from the woods and given to Asher, a huntsman with the local hunt club, who raises him beside a litter of hound puppies. Merlin is the puppy the fox grows closest to, and the two are companions as they mature. Asher and Tod take an interest in Tag, whose cunning and familiarity with human habitation let him lead the pack and the hunters on long chases across the countryside. Those chases make the fox a local celebrity, and his exploits are written up in magazines. Merlin, no keen hunter at first, becomes an active hound while staying protective of his old friend. Asher, aging in the club's service, keeps a mild protectiveness toward the animal he raised.
