Plot summary
Eric Rivers, Dustin Knight and Matt Jensen finish high school and spend one final summer on a road trip instead of heading to college. They follow Jimmy Wilson, a pro skater they look up to, along his demo tour, believing he will notice them and sign them to his team. Wilson's road manager stops them at the door before they can show him anything. The three decide to build a team of their own, with Dustin's college fund paying for it. They bring in Sweet Lou Singer, who supplies the van for the drive from Chicago to Santa Monica. Along the way they meet professional skaters and Jamie, a skater girl.

- Because of budget limits, Grind was shot with two units at once: Scala directed the main unit while a second unit overseen by Tony Hawk set up, which kept the film on schedule and allowed up to 27 setups in a day. The cast were not allowed to skate on set, for fear of injuries.
- Director and producer Casey La Scala grew up in the Dogtown skating era and made Grind a comedy in the mould of National Lampoon's Animal House and Revenge of the Nerds, the latter inspiring him to cast Donald Gibb as the "Scabby Security Guy".
- During filming of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Adam Brody contacted Scala to tell him that Brad Pitt had allegedly claimed Grind to be his favorite movie.
- Warner Bros. Pictures were hesitant to give Grind a wide release, uncertain how popular the skateboarding scene was and wary of the absence of major stars in leading roles, but two highly positive test screenings persuaded the studio to open it in 2,253 theaters.
- The film opened in tenth place with a disappointing weekend gross of $1,079,295, facing stiff competition from Freddy vs. Jason and S.W.A.T., and completed its run with a worldwide total of $5,141,166.
