Biography

Joey Diaz is a stand-up comedian, actor, podcaster, and author of Cuban American heritage who turned to stand-up full time in 1991, working in Colorado and Seattle, then moved to Los Angeles in 1995 to act. Born in Havana and raised in New York and New Jersey, he took a stand-up course in Denver and developed a blue comedy act. His early screen work included BASEketball (1998) and Analyze That (2002), followed by roles in Taxi (2004), Spider-Man 2 (2004), and The Longest Yard (2005). He appeared in television series such as My Name is Earl, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Maron, and in the film The Dog Who Saved Christmas (2009). He gained wider attention through The Joe Rogan Experience and hosted The Church of What's Happening Now from 2012 to 2020 and has since hosted Uncle Joey's Joint. His stand-up specials include It's Either You or the Priest (2012) and Sociably Unacceptable (2016).

Big break
Diaz got his role in a remake after Chris Rock told him over lunch with Adam Sandler that he could get him an audition. He sent in a tape, and three days later he had the part, which was then extended.
First role
Before his first standup routine, Diaz worked as a doorman at Wit's End. Matt Woods headlined the show where Diaz performed that first routine, on June 18, 1991, at Comedy Works in Denver.
First role
In 1998, after a CBS talent scout saw Diaz perform comedy in Seattle, he got a contract for a television pilot, playing a bartender in Bronx County. The pilot was not picked up, but it led to his first feature film role, a referee in BASEketball.
About the name
In 2007, Diaz hosted humorous promotions for the Ultimate Fighting Championship under the name Joey Karate, offering karate instructions and funny predictions for upcoming fights.
