Plot summary
Ten-year-old Emil Tischbein boards a bus in Neustadt bound for Berlin, carrying an envelope with 400 marks that his mother has asked him to hand to his grandmother. He falls asleep on the ride and wakes to find the envelope gone. Emil is certain the thief is Grundeis, the man who had been sitting beside him, so he follows him through Berlin and calls a policeman, but Grundeis gets away to a meeting with The Baron. In Berlin, Emil meets Gustav, a boy who rounds up other children to work as detectives. They take up the hunt for Grundeis and the money, and learn that the thief is mixed up with a pair of bank robbers.
