Plot summary
Out of prison again, John Dortmunder is handed a job by Andy Kelp, his brother-in-law. Dr. Amusa, an ambassador from an African country, wants a stone held in the Brooklyn Museum. The gem matters deeply to Amusa's people: it was taken during colonial times and has passed between African nations since. Dortmunder and Kelp add Stan Murch, who drives, and Allan Greenberg, who works with explosives, and the four lay out a careful plan for the museum. The plan is not the last one they will need. Abe Greenberg, a lawyer and Greenberg's father, has his own interest in the stone, and Dortmunder calls the diamond cursed.

- Punk band Sleater-Kinney named their 1998 album The Hot Rock after the film, and its cover shows the band recreating the movie's poster in downtown Portland, Oregon.
- Despite starring Robert Redford and George Segal, director Peter Yates said the film flopped, recalling: "Nobody went to see it."
- Quincy Jones wrote the caper music, with instrumentation from Grady Tate, Clark Terry and Gerry Mulligan as well as members of L.A.'s Wrecking Crew, and the beats and breaks were later sampled by the likes of Eminem.
