Plot summary
Steve Jackson works at a steel mill, and Wardell Franklin drives a taxi; the two men are best friends. Steve is a confident, flirtatious family man, while Wardell has a carefree attitude and acts on impulse. Wardell talks Steve into a Saturday night at Madame Zenobia's, an illegal club. Robbers raid the place and take the cash, the jewelry and Steve's wallet. Only afterward does Steve realize that the lottery ticket in that wallet is worth $50,000. He and Wardell set out to recover it, and they seek help from the gangster Dan "Geechie Dan" Beauford, who is short-tempered and has a rival gangster of his own. Beauford proves open to persuasion where money is concerned.
