1. A first

   Goulet had never performed the U.S. anthem publicly before, having only sung "O Canada" in public. He sang "dawn's early night" instead of "dawn's early light" and also intoned "gave proof through the fight."

2. Big break

   Lerner and Loewe signed Goulet, still a virtual newcomer, to play the part after being impressed by his singing. He appeared opposite Richard Burton as King Arthur and Julie Andrews as Queen Guenevere.

3. Early training

   Goulet studied voice at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto on a scholarship, training with oratorio baritones George Lambert and Ernesto Vinci and with Mary Rezza.

4. 

   First role

   Goulet's first film performance was voicing the male lead, Jaune Tom, in the 1962 animated musical Gay Purr-ee, opposite Judy Garland as Mewsette.

5. Behind the award

   Goulet won the 1968 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for playing photographer Jacques Bonnard in The Happy Time, a role that let him use an authentic French-Canadian accent.

6. First role

   With the Kenley Players, Goulet took his first U.S. bookings in summer stock theater. He was in eight productions, among them Pajama Game, Bells Are Ringing and South Pacific.
