Kathie Lee Gifford
Biography
Kathie Lee Gifford is an American television host and writer who has also acted and recorded music. Raised in Bowie, Maryland, she started out on national television in the late 1970s, singing on the game show Name That Tune, then joined the short-lived Hee Haw spinoff Hee Haw Honeys in 1978 and reported for Good Morning America. In 1985 she took over from Ann Abernethy as Regis Philbin's co-host on WABC's The Morning Show, which became Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee nationally in 1988. The two were nominated for the Daytime Emmy as outstanding talk show host eight years running, from 1993 to 2000, and she left in 2000. From 2008 to 2019 she co-hosted the fourth hour of Today with Hoda Kotb, and they won a Daytime Emmy together in 2019. Her later films include A Godwink Christmas (2018) and Then Came You (2020), and she wrote the book and lyrics for the Broadway musical Scandalous.

First role
Gifford's first television role was as the singer and sidekick to host Tom Kennedy on the syndicated Name That Tune during the 1977-1978 season.
Big break
On June 24, 1985, Gifford took over from Ann Abernethy as co-host of The Morning Show on WABC-TV alongside Regis Philbin. In 1988 the program began national broadcast as Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee.
A role that slipped away
Gifford decided to leave Live! in 2000. She said guest-hosting Late Show with David Letterman and filling in for Carol Burnett on Broadway made her want to pursue more challenging work.
Behind the camera
For Saving Aimee, a stage musical about the evangelist Aimee McPherson, Gifford supplied both the book and the lyrics. Carolee Carmello took the lead when it premiered in 2007 at the Signature Theatre in Arlington, Virginia.
Early training
After finishing high school in 1971, Gifford went to Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she studied drama and music.
