Plot summary
Louis Kahn designed the Exeter Library, the Salk Institute and the Bangladeshi Capitol Building. He had children by three different partners, and each family was kept in the dark about the others. Nathaniel, his son by one of those women, grew up hoping his father would leave his wife and move in with him and his mother, but Louis never left. Louis was found dead in a men's room at Penn Station in 1974, when Nathaniel was 11. Nathaniel later travels to his father's buildings, among them the Yale Center for British Art and the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, and meets Louis's contemporaries, colleagues, students, wives and children.
