Plot summary
Hated is a documentary about GG Allin, the punk musician known for extreme behavior on and off stage. His shows become confrontational events, with indecent exposure, onstage defecation and physical assaults. Footage of concerts and rehearsals appears alongside interviews with Allin, his bandmates, friends, critics and devoted fans. Allin also describes his early childhood in rural New Hampshire, where his father tried to persuade the family to help him in a mass suicide.

- The documentary was the directorial debut of Todd Phillips, who was still a junior at New York University while it was in production.
- GG Allin never saw the finished film. At a screening days before his death, heavily intoxicated, he threw beer bottles at the screen, one of them injuring a woman; the screening was halted and he fled just before police arrived. The next day he gave Todd Phillips positive feedback and a hug.
