Plot summary
The cartoonist Robert Crumb drew the Keep On Truckin' strip, the Cheap Thrills album cover and Fritz the Cat, and he was a pioneer of underground comix in the 1960s. He collects 78-rpm blues records from the 1920s and 1930s. He is about to move to a house in southern France with his wife, Aline Kominsky-Crumb, and his daughter, Sophie, trading some of his sketchbooks for it. His mother, his brothers Charles and Maxon, his ex-wife and former girlfriends speak about him, and he sketches at cafés and on sidewalks.

- During the nine years it took to make the documentary, Zwigoff said he was "averaging an income of about $200 a month and living with back pain so intense that I spent three years with a loaded gun on the pillow next to my bed, trying to get up the nerve to kill myself."
- Crumb was not nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature; the nominating committee reportedly stopped watching after only twenty minutes. The snub, following that of Hoop Dreams the previous year, caused a media furor that made the Academy revamp its documentary nomination process.
