Plot summary
Lt. Billings and his cavalry patrol have been escorting Cpl. Hamilton, a mapmaker, and are on their way back to the fort when a messenger rides up with orders. Commissioner Kirby, who was to receive a newly signed treaty from Washington, cannot be found, so the patrol must carry the treaty to Chief Gray Cloud themselves, and they have nine days before an uprising begins. At a trading post, Taslik, the chief's son, offers to lead them to his father, and Billings accepts. The column crosses hard country where water is scarce. Taslik wears war paint, and as the men grow thirsty and restless, they wonder about the paint their guide wears.
