Eight-year-old Peyton Kelly turns up at the doorstep of Boston Rebels quarterback Joe Kingman and tells him she is his biological daughter, sent by his ex-wife, Sara. Joe is a wealthy bachelor, and his team is headed for the playoffs. In the last game of the regular season he had scored a touchdown after ignoring his open receiver, Travis Sanders. His agent, Stella Peck, fears the girl will damage his image and tries to keep him focused on the playoffs. When Joe leaves Peyton behind on the night of his restaurant and nightclub opening, a tabloid puts the story on its cover, and Stella decides he needs a fatherly image. Peyton asks Joe to repay her by taking her to a ballet academy.
