Biography

Slim Summerville was an American actor and director whose roughly three-decade screen career was centered on comedy. Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, he entered films in 1912 after meeting actor Edgar Kennedy, who introduced him to Mack Sennett at Keystone Studios. Sennett hired him for bit parts, the first of them a Keystone Cop in Hoffmeyer's Legacy. Tall and gangly, Summerville used his appearance to great effect in silent and sound comedies, and he directed over 50 productions, largely short films. Although he occasionally took dramatic roles, including Jesse James (1939) and All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), he was most successful in comedy, including several films with ZaSu Pitts. He appeared alongside Shirley Temple in two musical-comedy dramas, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1938) and Captain January (1936). His motion picture work brought him a Hollywood Walk of Fame star, and in 2012 he entered the New Mexico Entertainment Hall of Fame.
