Plot summary
Forrest Tucker has escaped custody sixteen times in a life spent in and out of prison, most recently from San Quentin. In 1981 he is 74 and robbing banks across the American south alongside Teddy Green, who drives, and John Waller, who keeps watch. He carries a gun but seldom draws it, so tellers remember a friendly old man and the holdups draw little notice. Driving away from one robbery, he stops beside Jewel, a widow whose car has broken down, and the police pass without seeing him. Jewel buys him lunch, and though he gives a false name, he tells her what he does, then calls it a joke. Dallas detective John Hunt, meanwhile, gathers witnesses' accounts of a courteous older robber.
