Plot summary
Butch "Bullet" Stein, a Jewish heroin and cocaine user, finishes an eight-year sentence for helping his friend Paddy in a robbery and comes home to Brooklyn on parole. He lives with his parents, his alcoholic father and depressed mother, and with his brothers: Louis, an unstable Vietnam veteran, and Ruby, who paints graffiti. He and Lester rob a pair of teenagers of their drugs, and he also holds up Flaco, a drug runner, knifing him in the eye and telling him to carry word of the return to Tank. Tank, who runs the neighborhood drug trade and bears a grudge against Bullet from the time they spent together, leans on Paddy to find him.
