Plot summary
When his mail truck breaks down, the postman S.D. Kluger begins answering the letters children send to Santa Claus. He tells them where Santa came from, starting with a baby who arrived at the door of Sombertown's mayor. The mayor, Burgermeister Meisterburger, orders his aide Grimsley to take the child to an orphanage, but the wind carries the baby off, and animals bring him to the Kringles, a family of elf toymakers. They rename him Kris and teach him their craft. Grown up, Kris volunteers to carry the Kringles' toys to Sombertown. On the road he meets a lost penguin, Topper. The mayor, who has banned all toys after tripping over a toy duck, orders Kris arrested when he hands toys to the town's children.
