Patrick Holt
Biography
Patrick Holt was an English actor whose career took in film, television, and the stage. Born Patrick Parsons in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, he began in repertory theater and in 1939 won a leading role in a London production. After military service in the Second World War, he attended the J. Arthur Rank charm school. Supporting work led to leads, including The Mark of Cain (1947), My Sister and I (1948), and A Boy, a Girl and a Bike (1949). He then became a star of B movies such as Guilt Is My Shadow (1950) and Suspended Alibi (1957), while appearing in bigger films including I Was Monty's Double (1958) and Ivanhoe (1952). In 1953 he acted in the West End musical The Glorious Days. Later he moved into character roles, with films ranging from Guns at Batasi (1964) to The Wild Geese (1978), and also including Thunderball (1965) and Young Winston (1972), plus television series such as The Avengers and Survivors.

A change of course
Holt began acting in repertory theaters and in 1939 took a leading London stage part. The Second World War interrupted his career when he joined the army, serving in Burma, Singapore and India, often behind enemy lines on secret missions, and rising to lieutenant colonel.
Early training
After the war Holt joined the J. Arthur Rank charm school, then moved from supporting roles into lead parts in late 1940s films.
