Nathan Harper is a high school senior in the Pittsburgh suburbs, living with Kevin and Mara, the couple he calls his parents. He has recurring nightmares and sees the psychiatrist Dr. Geraldine "Geri" Bennett. Teamed with Karen Murphy on a class assignment about missing children, he finds an age-progression photo of a missing boy, Steven Price, that resembles him. His background checks suggest he is not related by blood to Kevin and Mara, and Mara confirms she is not his mother. When he reaches out to the website, assassins come after him.
