Plot summary
Dr. Martin Harris comes to Berlin with his wife Elizabeth for a biotechnology summit. His briefcase is still at the airport, so he takes a taxi back for it. The taxi goes off a bridge into the Spree, and the driver pulls him out and leaves. He wakes in a hospital four days later and goes to the hotel, where Elizabeth is with a man who says he is her husband and she says she does not know Harris. His only hope is Gina, the driver, an undocumented Bosnian immigrant.

- Producer Andrew Rona said the film's $40 million budget was pieced together from Joel Silver's Dark Castle Entertainment putting up $30 million and German public film funds contributing more than $6 million.
- A television sequel to Unknown was announced in development at TNT in June 2021, with Liam Neeson attached as executive producer and director Jaume Collet-Serra set to direct and executive produce the pilot.
- The film is based on a 2003 French novel by Didier Van Cauwelaert, published in English under the title Out of My Head.
