Plot summary
Eight applicants reach the last stage of a selection process for a mysterious, powerful corporation. They enter a windowless room with desks, an armed guard, and an Invigilator. He gives them eighty minutes to answer one question and states three rules: do not talk to him or the guard, do not spoil the papers, do not leave. He starts the clock and walks out. The candidates turn over their papers and find them blank. One woman writes on her sheet and is disqualified at once. The other seven realize they may speak to one another and agree to cooperate in locating the question before they compete to answer it. A candidate named White gives the rest nicknames based on their looks, and the group tries lights, liquids, and sprinklers to expose hidden words.

- Exam began as a different kind of test: the original story involved an exam at a school, but Stuart Hazeldine changed it to be a job interview.
- The story's backdrop did not come from nowhere: the film's pandemic was influenced by contemporary fears of bird flu and distrust of pharmaceutical companies.
- An earlier version of the script had more science fiction elements in it, but Hazeldine stripped them out to keep the film grounded.
- The film's premise later crossed into live theater: on 4 September 2012, a stage adaptation of the film opened in Manchester.
