Delphine Seyrig
Biography
The French actress and film director Delphine Seyrig was born in Beirut and spent part of her childhood in New York City. She trained under Jean Dasté at the Comédie de Saint-Étienne and later studied at the Actors Studio, and small television parts preceded her first screen role in the short Pull My Daisy. Alain Resnais then cast her as the lead of his 1961 film, which brought her international recognition and a move to Paris. She worked with Luis Buñuel, Marguerite Duras, François Truffaut and Fred Zinnemann, earned the best actress prize at the Venice Film Festival for Resnais's Muriel, and became widely known as Colette de Montpellier in Zinnemann's The Day of the Jackal (1973). Her most demanding role was the title part in Chantal Akerman's Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975). She also directed three films, among them the documentary Sois belle et tais-toi.

Seyrig's most demanding part was the title role of Chantal Akerman's 1975 Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, for which she adopted a restrained, minimalistic acting mode.
Beyond film
Seyrig also worked as a reciter on music recordings. With the Nash Ensemble she took part in Debussy's Les chansons de Bilitis, a Virgin Classics recording from 1991.
