Biography

Joyce Carey was an English actress whose stage career lasted from 1916 to 1987. Born in London to the actors Gerald Lawrence and Lilian Braithwaite, she trained at the Florence Etlinger Dramatic School and first took the stage in 1916 as Princess Katherine in an all-female Henry V. Light West End comedy and a large repertory of Shakespearean roles followed, among them Juliet and Titania at Stratford-upon-Avon. She first appeared in a Noel Coward play in New York in 1926. In 1942 she toured with Coward again, taking roles in This Happy Breed, Blithe Spirit and Present Laughter, all of which she later played in London. Her films included In Which We Serve (1942), Brief Encounter (1945), where she played the station buffet manageress, Blithe Spirit (1945) and The Way to the Stars (1945). She starred in the television series The Cedar Tree from 1976 to 1979 and gave her last stage performance in 1984.

Behind the camera
In 1934 Carey wrote a comedy called Sweet Aloes using a pseudonym, and she also took a supporting part in it. The play had a London run lasting over a year.
