Plot summary
Truck and his partner Jerry work as bounty hunters in Los Angeles. Truck's girlfriend Annie is in jail and wants to leave the city once she is released. The bail bondsman Nate Dinwiddie sends the two men to Fogarty about Gator, a pimp who has skipped bail. They visit Dorinda, the madam who runs Gator's stable of prostitutes, and wait there for him. Gator escapes their first chase; a tip from Duke, a friend of Truck's, lets them find him again, and Gator is killed. Dorinda then offers Gator's rival pimps a deal: whoever kills Truck takes Gator's place while she runs the stable. Harvard Blue is the one who takes up the violence.

- Director Jonathan Kaplan said the bounty hunter script was written for Lee Marvin, Robert Mitchum or Ernest Borgnine. When none of them could be landed, Larry Gordon at AIP declared that it was now a black picture, and Isaac Hayes was cast instead.
- The screenplay began as Leigh Chapman's story about a caucasian bounty hunter, bought by Fred Weintraub in partnership with Larry Gordon. Chapman refused to do free rewrites, was told she was off the project anyway, and disowned the blaxploitation rewrite so completely that she took her story credit under the pseudonym Jerry Wilkes, part of her ex-husband's name.
- Isaac Hayes not only starred but composed the score, first issued as a double vinyl album. Quentin Tarantino later reached back for it, using some of the Truck Turner music in his Kill Bill films.
