Plot summary
Henry DeTamble is a special collections librarian in Chicago whose genetic condition makes him travel through time without warning, carrying him to people and places from his own life. In 1991, Clare Abshire walks into the library where he works and greets him with joy even though he has never met her; she tells him that an older Henry visited her many times as a child and said the two of them would meet. Clare has loved him since she was six. They begin a relationship, and his sudden disappearances shape it: he cannot choose when he leaves or where he lands, and he arrives with nothing on him, having learned to pick locks and steal clothing.
