Plot summary
Kate Forster, a physician, has been renting a glass house on a lake outside Chicago. She moves to a downtown apartment to start a hospital job and leaves a note requesting that the next occupant forward her mail. She adds that pawprints painted on the walkway and a box in the attic were there before she arrived. In 2004, architect Alex Wyler takes the house and reads the note, puzzled, since he sees no pawprints. He is restoring the house and has befriended a dog, which runs through paint and tracks it across the walkway, so he writes back. The dates on her letters say 2006. Letters left in the mailbox pass between them almost at once, and the two work out that two years separate them.

- The house was actually built on dry land and then flooded so that it would appear to stand in the lake; after filming it had to be removed, and a simple fishing dock was put in its place.
- Released by Warner Home Video on DVD, Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD on the same day, it was the first film put out simultaneously on all three formats, and Warner became the first studio to issue a title in this manner.
- A remake of the 2000 South Korean film Il Mare, it stars Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, who had last appeared together in the 1994 action thriller Speed.
- The scene where Alex and Simon converse in Simon's home was filmed at the Prairie Avenue Bookshop, an architectural bookstore in Chicago which closed in 2009.
- The film was nominated for Choice Liplock, for the kiss between Bullock and Reeves, at the 2006 Teen Choice Awards, and it won.
