Plot summary
Truvy Jones runs a beauty salon out of her house in Chinquapin Parish, in northwestern Louisiana, and the women of the town come there to have their hair done. Annelle Dupuy, a shy graduate of beauty school, arrives and is hired. M'Lynn Eatenton brings her daughter Shelby in before Shelby's wedding that afternoon, and M'Lynn's husband Drum fires blanks into the trees to keep the birds off the reception. Clairee Belcher, a former mayor's widow, joins them, along with Ouiser Boudreaux. Shelby lives with type 1 diabetes and has an episode in the salon; M'Lynn says her doctor advises against children. Annelle tells the women her husband took her money, belongings and car and disappeared, and that she doubts the marriage was legal.

- Robert Harling wrote the original play after his sister died in 1985 of diabetic complications following the birth of his nephew. A writer friend kept pushing him to put it on paper; he began it as a short story for the boy, and in ten days it turned into the play.
- Meg Ryan was first cast as Shelby but dropped out to make When Harry Met Sally, and the part went instead to Julia Roberts.
- The film was shot in Natchitoches, Louisiana in the summer of 1988 with a former mayor of the town, historian Robert DeBlieux, as local advisor. The house used for much of the filming was later turned into a six-suite bed and breakfast that guests can rent.
