Plot summary
Fort-de-France, on the French island of Martinique, is under Vichy control in the summer of 1940, and Harry Morgan wants nothing to do with it. He runs a sport-fishing boat, the Queen Conch, taking tourists out for hire, with Eddie, a former top mate ruined by drink, as his crew. One client, Johnson, owes him $825 and promises to settle when the banks open. At his hotel, the owner Gérard, known to English speakers as Frenchy, presses him to carry Resistance people onto the island by night; Harry refuses, unwilling to take sides. A young American, Marie Browning, has just flown in from Rio, and a duet with the pianist Cricket keeps Johnson at a distance. Harry watches her lift Johnson's wallet and follows her to her room across the hall.

- Because both Hemingway and Faulkner contributed to it, this is the only film story on which two winners of the Nobel Prize for Literature worked.
- At the time of casting, Bacall was an 18-year-old model. She had appeared on the cover of Harper's Bazaar and was noticed there by Hawks's wife, Nancy 'Slim' Keith, who showed the cover photograph to her husband.
- Because the rights to the novel bounced between sellers, Hawks made ten times more money selling them than Hemingway did. On learning this, Hemingway reportedly refused to speak to Hawks for three months.
- Joseph Breen read the script and cited three dozen instances that violated the Production Code, objecting that Morgan was an unpunished murderer and the women suggested prostitutes. He required the characters to be softened, all suggestion of inappropriate sexual relations removed, and the murder made to appear as self-defense.
- Two weeks before the end of production, Bacall was called to Hawks's home, where he told her Bogart did not love her and that she was in danger of losing career opportunities, threatening to send her to B-list Monogram Pictures. She told Bogart, and he became upset with Hawks.
- A persistent myth holds that a teenage Andy Williams dubbed Bacall's singing. Williams and some female singers were indeed tested because of fears she lacked the vocal skills, but the wish to have Bacall sing herself won out, and Hawks and Bacall both said the dubbing never happened.
- Bacall's whistle line to Bogart is ranked #34 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Movie Quotes. When Bogart was buried, she placed a gold whistle in his coffin inscribed 'If you want anything, just whistle', a nod to the line from their first film together.
