Marjorie Gateson

Marjorie Gateson was an American stage and film actress who worked in musical comedy before turning to the screen. Born in Brooklyn, she studied at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, where her mother taught elocution, and began in the chorus of The Pink Lady, making her Broadway debut in 1912 in The Dove of Peace. She went on to Broadway musicals such as Have a Heart and Oh, Ernest! and headed for Hollywood after the 1930 comedy As Good as New. Her screen debut came in 1931, and she became known for supporting parts as haughty, aloof society women. She played the matron who tries to block Mae West's social climbing in Goin' to Town (1935) and a kinder socialite taught to box by Harold Lloyd in The Milky Way (1936). She appeared in You'll Never Get Rich (1941) and later turned to television, playing Grace Harris Tyrell on The Secret Storm from 1954 to 1968. She died in 1977.
