Plot summary
Captain Colter Stevens, an Army helicopter pilot, wakes on a Metra commuter train bound for Chicago with no memory of how he got there. His last recollection is flying a mission in Afghanistan, yet everyone aboard, including Christina Warren, knows him as a school teacher named Sean Fentress. Eight minutes after he wakes, a bomb destroys the train. Stevens then finds himself in a dark capsule, where Air Force Captain Colleen Goodwin speaks to him through a video screen. She tells him the explosion was real and that he must return to the same eight minutes to identify the bomber, because a second attack is expected. Dr. Rutledge oversees the project that makes the trips possible. Stevens is sent back into the interval again and again.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Source Code (2011)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Ripley, who had established himself in Hollywood largely doing studio rewrites on horror movies, meant to sell the idea with a pitch: "I sat down with a few producers, and the first couple just looked at me like I was nuts." He had to put it on the page to make his case.
- The antagonist Derek Frost was inspired by David Hahn, the boy depicted in the 2003 made-for-television documentary The Nuclear Boy Scout.
- Despite the film's grosses, according to director Duncan Jones the studio claims that it has never turned a profit, an outcome attributed to Hollywood accounting.
- After seeing Moon, Gyllenhaal lobbied for Jones to direct Source Code; Jones liked the fast-paced script and said he enjoyed working out how to achieve all the difficult things it set up, because he likes solving puzzles.
SPOILER
As the world around him continues to progress beyond the eight minutes, Stevens confirms his suspicion that the Source Code is not merely a simulation, but a machine that allows the creation of alternate timelines.
