Plot summary

Wes Riemann is an actuary at a life insurance company. From charts and medical history he can work out how many years a person has left, though only as a statistical estimate. What he finds at the firm is not an estimate: policies are canceled weeks, sometimes days, before the policyholder dies, sparing the company the payout. That means someone there knows the exact date of each death in advance. Behind it sits an enterprise that treats life and death as a commodity. To stop the company from doing further harm to the people it insures, and to protect himself, Wes risks everything to find out where that knowledge comes from.
