Plot summary

George Almore is developing artificial intelligence that can match a human mind, and a robot that can hold a consciousness permanently. Two earlier machines, J1 and J2, taught him what he needs, and the third, J3, is close to finished. He keeps his reason hidden: his wife Jules died in a car accident, and a device made by the company Archive lets him speak with a stored copy of her consciousness for up to two hundred hours. J2 holds the mind of a sixteen-year-old, grows jealous of the work on J3, and begins to behave unpredictably. George builds the robots at his workplace in secret.
