Plot summary
Remember Steddon and Owen Scudder marry after a quick courtship, and on their wedding night she changes her mind. When the train they are riding stops for water, she gets off unseen in the middle of the desert. Scudder does not have the train halted when he notices she is gone. Walking in search of civilization and badly dehydrated, Mem encounters a camel and its rider, who proves to be the actor Tom Holby at work on a location shoot. She recovers, is hired as an extra, and draws the attention of both Holby and Frank Claymore. When the shoot finishes, she takes a job at a desert inn rather than travel on to Hollywood with the company.
