Richard Dix
Biography
Richard Dix was an American actor who became a leading man in both silent films and talkies, usually playing rugged, stalwart heroes. Born Ernst Carlton Brimmer in Saint Paul, Minnesota, he trained for the stage in the evenings while working at a bank, made his professional start with a local stock company, then worked in stock in New York and Los Angeles before Paramount signed him and he adopted the name Richard Dix. After early dramas and romantic comedies, he starred in the Western To the Last Man and in Cecil B. DeMille's silent The Ten Commandments. His role as Yancey Cravat in Cimarron (1931) earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, and the film took Best Picture. Other credits include The Tunnel (1935), The Ghost Ship (1943) and Badlands of Dakota (1941), and he finished his career in the Whistler crime series. In 1960, a star for him was dedicated on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
