Erich von Stroheim
Biography
Erich von Stroheim was an Austrian-American filmmaker of the silent era who worked as a director, screenwriter, producer and actor. Born in Vienna in 1885, he was working in Hollywood by 1914, starting out as a stuntman and in bit parts before playing sneering German villains in First World War films such as The Heart of Humanity (1918). He began directing with Blind Husbands in 1919, which he also starred in, followed by Foolish Wives (1922) and The Wedding March (1928). His film Greed (1924) was re-edited by the studio against his wishes, and repeated fights over budgets and artistic control brought fewer directing jobs, so he returned to acting. Later he worked in both American and French films and received the French Legion of Honour. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor as Max von Mayerling in Sunset Boulevard (1950), and was also known for Rauffenstein in Grand Illusion (1937).

A role that slipped away
Stroheim was fired from Merry-Go-Round during filming and replaced as director by Rupert Julian, after he had cast Norman Kerry in a part written for himself.
A role that slipped away
In 1929, Stroheim lost his job as director of Queen Kelly. He had clashed with star Gloria Swanson and with producer and financier Joseph P. Kennedy about the film's rising costs and the indecent subject matter he put into its scenario.
A role that slipped away
In France just before World War II, Stroheim planned to direct La dame blanche, based on his own story and screenplay. Jean Renoir handled the dialogue, and Stroheim, Louis Jouvet and Jean-Louis Barrault were set to act, but war broke out on September 1, 1939.
