Plot summary
A letter brings the Hills an unusual offer: a wealthy uncle will advance them whatever money they need to see the world now, before he dies. Fred leaves his job, and he and Emily cross the channel to France and visit Paris. Fred spends much of that trip seasick. They then book passage on an ocean liner from Marseille to the Orient, and Fred's illness returns at sea, leaving Emily on her own among the passengers. She becomes friendly with Commander Gordon, a popular bachelor, and their conversations turn to love. Once he has recovered, Fred is drawn to a German princess on board, and the two spouses spend more and more of the voyage apart.
