Plot summary
Isabelle Perry travels from Mississippi to New York, where she and her fiancé Henry Greene stop at Tomasso Antiovi's speakeasy. Henry is quick-tempered and snobbish, and he takes an instant dislike to Judge Dempsey, the retired and amiable man who chats with Isabelle. Henry goes outside to move his car, which is parked illegally. While he is away, Isabelle gets to know Gus Di Ruvo, the opera star she admires, who performs as Tino Caraffa and is known as a charming playboy. When Henry returns he is furious to find them dancing, and Isabelle breaks their engagement and hands back his ring. Gus invites her to spend the night at his apartment and tells her plainly that his intentions are strictly dishonorable. Judge Dempsey warns her against going, but she has fallen in love and wants to stay.
