Plot summary
A spaceship built to look like its captain lands on Liberty Island, run by a crew of tiny, unemotional humanoids. They come from Nil, a planet short on energy, and they need the orb they sent to Earth to drain the oceans' salt. The orb is knocked off course and ends up in the fishbowl of Josh Morrison, a fifth-grade boy whose mother, Gina, does not believe him. When Gina's car strikes the walking ship, its power fails and the crew has 48 hours to finish the job. The Captain takes the name Dave Ming Chang and goes looking for the orb, while a superstitious officer named Dooley hunts the visitor and his partner Knox doubts him.

- The film set a box-office record for the biggest theater drop in wide release, losing 2,523 theaters (77 percent) in its third weekend, a record that stood until Live by Night lost 94.1 percent of its theaters in January 2017.
- Eddie Murphy did not attend the Meet Dave premiere, claiming it was because he was working on the subsequently delayed comedy A Thousand Words, although Robbins, who had directed both films, did attend the premiere.
- The film was written under the title Starship Dave, but studio executives forced a change partly to distance it from Eddie Murphy's earlier science-fiction flop The Adventures of Pluto Nash.
- The film drew two Razzie nominations, both for the same performer: Worst Actor for Eddie Murphy, and Worst Screen Couple for "Eddie Murphy in Eddie Murphy".
- Screenwriter Corbett unsuccessfully argued against the new title, which he described as "beyond generic" and said was repetitive of a comedy released earlier in the year called Meet Bill.
