Plot summary
Michael Cooper is a secondary school student whose family has moved into a decrepit house, with his parents Louise and Dave. A baby sister is born to the family, and doctors find that the newborn has a heart condition, so she is sent to the hospital. Louise and Dave argue about whether to move away while the baby is ill. Michael explores the garden shed and finds Skellig, a man with owl wings, huddled in a corner. Skellig is weak in body but strong in will. Michael befriends Mina, a girl who is equally curious about the stranger. Michael returns to the shed to learn more about Skellig and to try to nurse him back toward health.
