John Simm
Biography
John Simm is an English actor, producer, and musician who was born in Leeds and grew up in northwest England. He trained at the Drama Centre London and made his professional debut in 1992 in an episode of Rumpole of the Bailey. His early television work included Cracker and The Lakes, and he starred in the films Human Traffic (1999) and Wonderland (1999). In 2002 he appeared in 24 Hour Party People, played Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment, and starred in Miranda. He played Sam Tyler in Life on Mars and the Master in Doctor Who, and later played Det Supt Roy Grace in Grace. His performance in Prey won the 2014 Royal Television Society award, and he has been nominated twice for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor. His stage work included Elling, Hamlet, and The Homecoming.

Simm helped found the rock band Magic Alex, playing guitar and writing songs, in the 1990s and early 2000s. The group released one album, Dated and Sexist, and split in 2005 after he decided to concentrate on acting.
