Plot summary
Strangers drift into a downtown Los Angeles bar at Nikki Franklyn's invitation, and each of them once dated her. Zachary Newman, a salesman, is the first to arrive, and Miranda Prague soon joins him. Comparing notes, they find that Nikki is the link between them and that she told each to come at a different hour. Marvin Coolidge, a jazz musician, is the third, with the same account. Nikki recently left a mental hospital after poisoning a man she had been dating. She finally appears, carrying a round of drinks and her fiancé, Bert Mayfaire, the lawyer who had defended her. She says the evening is for an announcement: she is getting married. Bert is angry that the engagement has been made public, since he worries about his law license.
